Richiusa Canyon from Ajaccio: how demanding is the trip?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 7 min read
Richiusa is sold as an introductory canyon, but “beginner” does not mean effortless. The standard outing involves a 45–60 minute uphill approach, about 2 hours in moving water and a short return walk. You must be able to swim and be comfortable scrambling on wet rock. The jumps can be bypassed; the walk and cold water cannot.
What the half-day contains
The Richiusa Canyon tour at Bocognano lasts about 3.5 hours and starts at €65 on GetYourGuide. The local operator’s detailed programme describes slides, jumps, a 10-metre abseil and a zip line, with helmet, harness, wetsuit and canyon backpack supplied.
The approach is the first test. Operator information gives 45 minutes to 1 hour on foot, including steep terrain. The water section follows through natural pools, slides and abseils, then a return walk of roughly 20 minutes. Timings vary with the group and water conditions.
Are the jumps compulsory?
The operator explicitly says jumps are not compulsory. That matters, because jumps are part of the programme. A guide can direct participants around a jump or use another technique where the route allows it. This does not make every obstacle optional: you still need to follow the guide, enter cold water and move through a natural gorge.
Tell the instructor about fear of heights or a health concern before setting off, not at the lip of a jump. The guide makes the decision about conditions and the suitable route on the day.
Age, fitness and swimming
One local operator lists its discovery descent from age 9, subject to swimming ability. Another product may set a different minimum. Use the age shown on your exact booking page and confirm it directly for a child; do not transfer the limit from one operator to another.
You do not need previous canyoning experience, but reasonable fitness is important. The approach, uneven ground and repeated transitions are more demanding than an ordinary swim. This is a poor choice for someone with an injury that is aggravated by steep walking, impact or a tight harness. Ask the operator rather than relying on a generic accessibility label.
What to bring
The operator supplies technical equipment, but participants are asked to bring swimwear, water, a snack, a T-shirt for the approach and trainers or canyon shoes. Ordinary beach sandals do not provide the grip or protection needed. Shoe hire may be available; check sizes and price when booking.
Leave valuables behind or ask what dry storage is provided. Apply the operator’s environmental guidance on toiletries and sunscreen, because the activity takes place directly in a freshwater ecosystem.
Getting to Bocognano
The meeting point is at the canyoning base in Bocognano, not central Ajaccio. Operator guidance estimates about 45 minutes by road from Ajaccio, but allow more for summer traffic and finding the base. The Ajaccio–Bastia railway serves Bocognano, yet the station timetable and distance to a specific meeting point may not align with an early session. Confirm with the operator before relying on the train.
If you want the flexibility to continue through the Gravona valley, compare rental cars in Ajaccio. Check the deposit, excess, fuel policy and return time with the rental company rather than assuming they are included.
Is it worth it?
Book Richiusa if you want an active half-day and the approach walk sounds like part of the adventure. Skip it if your main aim is a gentle river swim. For most fit first-timers, the guided Richiusa Canyon tour is the right format because the equipment and state-qualified instruction are integral, not optional extras.
