Ajaccio by open-top bus: which route is worth taking?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 6 min read
Ajaccio has two open-top bus products that look similar on a booking page, and both stop at Parata with views of the Sanguinaires. The difference is duration and price: about 55 minutes from €10 versus 1.5 hours from €12. For first-time visitors the longer tour is usually worth it, because for €2 more it adds roughly 35 minutes and shows more of the town and coast.
The short city circuit
The Ajaccio open-top sightseeing tour lasts about 55 minutes and starts at €10. According to its description it runs in the afternoon and stops at the Torra di a Parata, a ruined Genoese tower with sweeping views of the Sanguinaires Islands. Treat it as an overview rather than transport; it does not replace entering the Maison Bonaparte, cathedral or Fesch Museum.
This option suits cruise passengers with a tight schedule and travellers who want to rest their legs. It is less compelling if you already plan to walk central Ajaccio, because the historic core is compact and many details are easier to notice on foot.
The longer coast route
The town and coast open-top bus tour lasts about 1.5 hours and starts at €12. According to its description it is guided, offers 360-degree views of the town and coast, and stops at Parata Point with views of the Sanguinaires Islands and the Gulf of Ajaccio.
Because both tours stop at Parata, the destination does not decide between them; time does. The longer tour gives you roughly 35 more minutes of town and coast. Check whether the departure you select actually includes time off the bus: “stop” and “photo stop” do not always provide enough time to walk to the Genoese tower.
What the open roof changes
The upper deck improves the view over parked cars and roadside walls, but it also exposes you to sun, wind and low branches. Bring sun protection and secure hats. In poor weather, the experience changes substantially; check how the operator handles rain and whether covered seating is available.
Audio commentary can provide a useful outline, although language availability and headphones vary. Confirm your language on the booking page. Sit on the coastal side where possible, but remember the bus turns and viewpoints shift.
Bus, little train or public transport?
Ajaccio’s tourist little train also connects the centre with the Sanguinaires road, while public bus line 5 serves beaches along that corridor. Public transport is the practical choice if you want several hours at a beach or Parata. The sightseeing bus is better when you want a narrated loop with no route planning.
Neither tourist vehicle is a hop-on hop-off network unless the ticket explicitly says so. Do not build a day around repeated boarding based on the appearance of the bus alone.
Our recommendation
For most visitors, choose the 1.5-hour town and coast tour. The difference from the 55-minute loop is €2 and roughly 35 minutes more for town and coast, while Parata is on both. Choose the 55-minute loop if you have a fixed ship departure, limited energy or already booked a separate Sanguinaires excursion. Whichever you take, leave the old town for walking afterwards: the bus explains Ajaccio’s shape, while its streets provide the detail.
